BeachBoys “Today!” – 1965 #4 Album – RIAA White Matte – Gold Record Award

The Beach Boys released The Beach Boys Today! in March 1965 as their eighth studio album and their first of three 1965 releases. It was certified gold October 1, 1965, and reached a peak Billboard chart position of #5. The RIAA White Matte that celebrates it here is Authentic, First Presentation, First-State, with documented provenance. But before we get to that, please notice the darker wood frame, which was typical in the first years of the RIAA White Matte format (1964-1965).

Thanks to  Wayne Johnson of Rockaway Records for spotlighting this award. It was presented to Brian Wilson (during this early White Matte period presentation plates didn’t name individuals, but rather groups), who later gave it to Wrecking Crew session drummer Hal Blaine.  Wayne told me he purchased the award directly from Hal in 1991, and that Hal mentions receiving it in his book “Hal Blaine And The Wrecking Crew.” It has been signed both on the backing paper and on the accompanying story of how Hal received it…

The original backing paper had torn along all four edges and Wayne resealed it personally on three sides to keep it intact, and still expose the original New York Frame & Picture Co. Sticker. Top hangings have replaced original wire hanging for display purposes.
