Creedence Clearwater Revival “Green River” – 1970 #1 Album – RIAA White Matte – Gold Record Award

John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook (all born in 1945) met at Portola Junior High School in El Cerrito, California and became Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) in 1967 when Saul Zaentz bought their label, Fantasy Records. According to Wikipedia, he offered the band a chance to record a full-length album on the condition that they change their name. Never having liked their previous name “the Golliwogs”, the four readily agreed to come up with ten suggestions each, but enthusiastically agreed to their first: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), which they took in January, 1968. The name’s three elements come from the following sources:

  • Tom Fogerty’s friend Credence Newball, whose name they changed to form the word creed (as in creed);
  • a television commercial for Olympia beer (“clear water”); and
  • the four members’ renewed commitment to their band.

Green River was the bands third studio album. Released in August 1969, certified RIAA gold on 12/16/70 (along with four other CCR albums), it reached a peak Billboard chart position of #1.  Here it is celebrated with an Authentic, First Presentation , Second-State White Matte gold record award.

creedencegreenriverGRLPWMFcreedencegreenriverGRLPWMPThe presentation to Fantasy Records, and the two holes in the sides of the frame, lead me to believe that at sometime it was on display in the company’s offices or distribution system.

creedencegreenriverGRLPWMBI call this a Second-State award because it looks like new backing paper, the top hanging (the original would have been a wire hanging anchored in the top set of holes) and the holes in the frame, while an example of its Authenticness, are now a condition issue.
