Pointer Sisters “Black and White” – 1981 #12 Album – RIAA Floater – Gold Record Award w/Condition Issues

From time to time collectors see awards with the disc fallen off its mounting, like the one below. The culprit is usually a bump, a drop, or the loosening of the adhesive over time. Here we see the condition issue on an RIAA “Floater” celebrating the Pointer Sister’s Black and White album. Released in June 1981, it was certified RIAA gold on 9/16/81, and went on to a peak Billboard chart position of #12.This is an Authentic, First Presentation, First-State award. If the condition issue is a concern, it could be repaired. There are different approaches, but here’s one that will work…

On a towel or other soft surface place the award face down, and with a razor blade carefully cut along the inner edge of the frame on the two sides and bottom. Gently fold the paper back to expose the nails (which are standard for this period of award) and with a pair of needle nose pliers gently take out each nail and put them aside. With the nails taken out gently remove the backing board/black matte/disc and plexiglass. Dust all the parts thoroughly with a photographic air spray dust remover, and clean the plexi with a plexiglass cleaner. With a strong two sided attachment tape (some would use a fast drying glue) remount the disc where it has fallen off, taking care to make sure the label is straight and centered. Reassemble the pieces and dust as you go, turn it over and double check, if there is any dust, dust again. With the disc straight and the dust removed, replace the nails and gently hammer them with a small head hammer. Then fold the paper back and tape the three open sides with an archival or masking tape. Gentle, as you can see, is the key word of the process, and when finished you’ll have an award fit for display. What would you do? How would you handle this condition issue?

This award was presented to David Urso, Vice President of Promotion at Planet Records who added the following inscription recognizing the Pointer Sisters accomplishments…
