Helen Reddy “Free and Easy” 1975 Silver British Phonographic Industry (BPI) LP Award

Helen Reddy is often referred to as the “Queen of 70s Pop” and she enjoyed international success. She was the first artist to ever win the coveted American Music Award for “Favorite Pop/Rock Female” artist and also the first Australian to win a Grammy Award.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the British record industry’s trade association, was founded in 1973. “Free and Easy” was released in the fall of 1974 and Certified Silver (sales of more than £75,000) by the BPI on July 1, 1975. In the United States it was certified Gold (sales of more than $1,000,000) by the RIAA on December 18, 1974. A first presentation RIAA award would be a white matte.  The BPI has been renamed The British Record Music Industry and still certifies music sales and conducts the annual Brit Awards, the British equivalent of the American Grammy Awards.

Jeff Wald was Helen’s husband and then manager. His influence, both positive and negative, has been widely discussed. They divorced in 1983.
