James Gang “Thirds” 1972 Gold RIAA LP White Matte Record Award

The James Gang was a rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1966. Thirds, their third studio album, was released in April, 1971, certified RIAA Gold on July 12, 1972, and reached a peak Billboard chart position of #27.  Here you see an Authentic, First Presentation RIAA White Mattel, presented to Joe Walsh. While the group had sales success nationally, it is best remembered as guitarist Joe Walsh’s first group. There is no provenance that this was Walsh’s award, but it is still a rare artist presentation.

The gold disc was manufactured by famous In House award manufacturer Disc Award Ltd., as were all ABC records White Mattes of the period (they were also used in A&M, MCA and Decca White Mattes). The label is faded and stained as if it had been out of the frame, and the backing board is two pieces instead of the one which is normal. I would call this a Second-State award because of these condition issues.

Thanks to Brad Rogers for this spotlight award.
