Now for the excitement of a RIAA record award Q & A! You ready? Close your eyes, inhale deeply, exhale, and when you open your eyes, take a look at the following questions. Answer them with the help of the three pictures below.
1. What is this James Taylor award format called?
2. Is the RIAA logo acid etched or silk screened?
3. Why would there be marks on the frame at either side of the disc?
4. What is the date when this award would be authorized for manufacture?
5. What company manufactured this award?
6. Do you think the backing paper is original or new? Why? Why not?
(Answers at the bottom)
James Taylor released his fourth studio album One Man Dog, in December 1972. It was certified RIAA gold on December 12, 1972 and peaked on the Billboard charts at #4.
1. During this period all logos on RIAA presentation plates were acid etched.
2. This RIAA format is commonly referred to as a White Matte.
3. Hooks for hanging White Mattes were at that side position on the back of the frame. The marks were created on the front when awards were stacked against each other.
4. Awards are authorized on the date of RIAA certification, in this case December 12, 1972.
5. The backing paper looks new. The visible marks on the front indicate handling, and the original backing paper would most likely have been torn and replaced.
6. The black and yellow sticker of New York Frame & Picture Co. is easy to recognize. They were the only certified award manufacturer in the White Matte period.
